Peace Palace Orange for 1 day

Peace Palace Orange for 1 day

At the request of the organization of the World Conference of Women’s Shelters, the Peace Palace will be lighted Orange on 25th of October 2015 for Orange Day.

The United Nations Secretary-General’s Campaign UNiTE to End Violence against Women has proclaimed the 25th of each month as ‘Orange Day’, a day to raise awareness and take action against violence against women and girls. As a bright and optimistic color, orange represents a future free from violence against women and girls, for the UNiTE Campaign. Orange Day calls upon activists, governments and UN partners to mobilize people and highlight issues relevant to preventing and ending violence against women and girls, not only once a year, on 25 November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women), but every month.

Last year the Empire State Building and UN Head Quarters in New York were lit Orange on the 25th of November. This year all eyes will be on The Hague as the Peace Palace is following this great example on the 25th of October.

Orange Day on the 25th of October is extra special for the Women’s Shelter Foundation because the UN will highlight the 3rd World Conference of Women’s shelters that will be held in The Hague, 3-6 November 2015.

3rd World Conference of Women’s Shelters The Conference is organized at the request of the Global Network of Women’s Shelters (GNWS). This network is founded in 2008 during the first World Conference of Women’s Shelters as an informal network and has been formalized this year with its head office in The Hague.

The 1st and 2nd Conference were very successful, yet continuous action remains crucial as violence against women and children still is a major global issue. One in every three women worldwide is affected by it at some point in their lives. In The Hague people from over 100 countries will come together to exchange knowledge and experiences, strengthen existing alliances and promote new ones.

The Dutch government and the municipality of The Hague are supporting the conference and so are many other supporters.

With the Conference and the communication around this event we want to raise awareness and: “Connect and Act to End Violence against women”. We want to achieve peace and safety for women and girls around the world. Lighting the Peace Palace Orange will be a powerful symbol for peace and a great support for all the workers trying to achieve this worldwide. No better way to do this with the eye-catching Orange, the national color of the Netherlands.
